A devastating fire outbreak in Kodjonya, a suburb of the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality in the Eastern Region, has claimed the lives of two people.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, March 31, 2026, leaving a husband and wife, identified as Mr. and Mrs. Tetteh, popularly known as Empareme, dead.
According to reports, the couple allegedly attempted to use petrol as a substitute insecticide to eliminate bedbugs inside their room. The highly flammable substance is believed to have ignited, possibly in contact with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), triggering a fire that rapidly engulfed the room.
The couple was trapped in the blaze and unfortunately could not escape.
Their four-year-old son, who was also caught in the fire, was rescued but sustained multiple injuries. He is currently receiving treatment at Atua Government Hospital.
The Zonal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) for Kodjonya, Alormenyo Joycelyn Dansuwaa, confirmed the incident.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, including teams from the Kpong and Somanya Fire Stations, responded to the scene alongside officers from the Ghana Police Service at the Odumase-Krobo District Police Command. Authorities have since secured the area and commenced investigations into the cause of the fire.
The bodies of the deceased are being prepared for transfer to the morgue at Akuse Government Hospital, pending completion of police documentation.
Investigations are ongoing, and further updates are expected.
