WORK-AND-PAY MOTORBIKE SCHEME FOR OKADA RIDERS - HON. EMMANUEL DRAH, UPPER WEST AKIM MP

The Member of Parliament for Upper West Akim, Honorable Emmanuel Drah, has addressed concerns raised by Okada riders in his constituency. Speaking to the media on Friday, August 15, 2026, the MP denied claims that he promised to buy motorbikes for them outright. Honorable Drah said the reports circulating that he pledged free motorbikes are not true. Despite the denial, the MP revealed that he is working on a support plan for Okada riders. According to him, the plan involves purchasing motorbikes which will be given to riders under a work-and-pay arrangement. He explained that riders will use the motorbikes to work and pay in installments, and full ownership will be transferred to them after they complete payment. The MP also addressed another key concern raised by the riders — constant harassment and arrests by police officers. Honorable Drah said he has heard the complaints and will engage the District Police Commander in Upper West Akim. The meeting, he noted, will seek lasting solutions to reduce tension between riders and law enforcement. In addition, the MP said the engagement with police will include rider education. He stated that riders will be trained on road safety, proper use of motorbikes, understanding road signs, and other legal requirements needed to operate on public roads. He believes this will help reduce accidents and improve professionalism among riders. Honorable Emmanuel Drah reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of Okada riders and said his office will continue to create sustainable opportunities to support their livelihoods in Upper West Akim.
