Abuakwa South MP to Embark on Media Tour of Galamsey Sites Over Birim River Pollution
Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, is set to embark on a live media campaign tour of illegal mining sites across the constituency to expose the extent of environmental destruction caused by galamsey.
The MP says the initiative is intended to bring the activities at mining sites directly before the public and draw national attention to the deteriorating condition of the Birim River.
Dr. Agyemang announced the planned media tour after a working visit to the Birim River with the District Manager of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Kibi, to assess the impact of illegal mining on the river and water treatment operations.
He said he was informed during the visit that turbidity levels in the Birim River have risen to approximately 50,000 NTU, while the Kibi Water Treatment Plant has remained shut since August 2026
Illegal mining in Kyebi and its environs has persisted for more than two decades but worsened in the last decade.
The Kibi Water Treatment plant has experienced intermittent shutdowns over the past decade because illegal mining activities have affected the quality of raw water supplied to the facility, disrupting water supply to customers.
Dr. Agyemang said the planned live media tour will take the public to various galamsey sites across the constituency to document the scale of the devastation and demand accountability.
He described the Birim River as a critical lifeline for communities in the area and warned that its continued degradation poses a threat to access to clean water.
The MP is therefore calling for urgent and coordinated action to halt illegal mining activities, protect the Birim River and restore operations at the Kibi Water Treatment Plant.
“The Birim is our lifeline. We cannot afford to lose it,” Dr. Agyemang said
