South Africa-Based Ghanaian Appeals to Government to Rescue Stranded Citizens Following Xenophobic Attacks

A Ghanaian based in South Africa has appealed to the Government of Ghana to urgently facilitate the return of hundreds of stranded Ghanaian nationals following recent xenophobic attacks in parts of the country. Speaking on ICAD TV's Ghana Nti Morning Show, Ofa Kwasi said approximately 900 Ghanaians remain stranded despite efforts by the Government of Ghana to repatriate affected citizens. According to him, although arrangements have reportedly been made for their evacuation, delays in the process have left many of the stranded Ghanaians without adequate shelter or other basic necessities. He said the prolonged wait has worsened the hardships they are facing amid the ongoing security concerns. Ofa Kwasi further alleged that Ghana's High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Amani Quashie, has not met with or addressed the stranded Ghanaians despite repeated attempts to seek assistance. These claims have not been independently verified, and the High Commission has not publicly responded to the allegations. He called on the Minister for Foreign Affairs to provide clarity on the reasons for the delay in the repatriation process and to take immediate steps to ensure the safe return of the remaining stranded Ghanaians. The appeal comes amid reports of xenophobic attacks in parts of South Africa, which have raised concerns about the safety and welfare of foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, living in the country.
