STRANDED GHANAIANS IN SOUTH AFRICA ACCUSE HIGH COMMISSIONER OF ABANDONING THEM AMID XENOPHOBIC ATTACKS

Some Ghanaians living in South Africa have accused Ghana's High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Amani Quashie, of failing to provide adequate support as they remain stranded amid ongoing xenophobic attacks. Speaking on ICAD TV's Ghana Nti Morning Show, a Ghanaian based in South Africa who identified himself as Ofa Kwasi alleged that members of the second batch of evacuees have been left stranded despite plans by the Government of Ghana to repatriate affected citizens. According to Ofa Kwasi, many of the stranded Ghanaians are living in fear, with some reportedly displaced from their homes as a result of the attacks. He said the delay in the evacuation process has worsened their situation, leaving many without adequate shelter and other basic necessities. He further alleged that although the Government of Ghana has initiated arrangements to evacuate affected nationals, the repatriation process has stalled. Ofa Kwasi also claimed that repeated attempts to seek assistance from the Ghana High Commission have been unsuccessful, alleging that High Commissioner Benjamin Amani Quashie has not met or communicated with the affected Ghanaians. He appealed to the Government of Ghana, particularly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to urgently intervene, provide updates on the evacuation process, and facilitate the safe return of the remaining stranded Ghanaians. The allegations made by Ofa Kwasi have not been independently verified, and the Ghana High Commission in South Africa has not publicly responded to the claims at the time of publication.
