NPP Must Properly Apologize for NAPO’s Statement to Win 2028 Elections"

Lawyer and historian Yaw Frimpong Anokye has advised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to offer a proper apology over comments made by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, during the party’s 2024 election campaign if it hopes to regain power in the 2028 general elections. Speaking in a phone interview with Nana Nhyiraba Kwabena Asirifi on ICAD TV’s Ghana Nti Morning Show, Lawyer Anokye argued that the remarks made by NAPO affected the party’s relationship with some sections of the electorate. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, who served as the NPP’s Vice-Presidential Candidate alongside Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 elections, made the controversial comment during a campaign event at Jubilee Park in Kumasi. He said: “From 1957 to now, not even your Kwame Nkrumah has moved Ghana forward and protected it like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.” Lawyer Yaw Frimpong Anokye said the statement has continued to generate public debate and believes the NPP needs to address the matter through a sincere apology. According to him, acknowledging the concerns raised by the comment would be important if the party wants to rebuild trust and reconnect with voters ahead of the 2028 elections. “If they refuse to do that, they wouldn’t win the 2028 elections because his statement has brought a curse on NPP,” he added. He maintained that the party must take steps to repair any damage caused by the remarks and adopt a more careful approach to political communication.
