Low Salaries and Poor Fan Support Are Hurting the Ghana Premier League

Former Ghana youth international and 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup winner Bright Addae has blamed the struggles of the Ghana Premier League on poor player welfare, low salaries, and inadequate support from football fans. Speaking in an interview with ICAD TV, the former WA All Stars defender reflected on the changes in Ghanaian football since his playing days. While acknowledging that today's players gain recognition much faster, he said the financial realities of the domestic league continue to force many talented footballers to pursue opportunities abroad. «"These days, players become popular very quickly, but once they get a little recognition, many of them want to travel because the salaries in the Ghana Premier League are not enough to support them," Addae said.» He also criticised the attitude of some supporters, saying fans often fail to appreciate experienced players and instead dismiss them as "too old." According to him, such perceptions discourage players and hinder the growth and competitiveness of the league. «"The supporters also need to do more. Sometimes they say a player is too old, and that kind of attitude doesn't help the development of the Ghana Premier League," he added.» Despite enjoying success at both club and international level, Addae reaffirmed his love for Ghanaian football. He revealed that if given the opportunity before retiring, he would gladly return to play for any Ghana Premier League club. «"If I get the chance to play for any Ghana Premier League club before I retire, I will gladly do so," he stated.» Bright Addae was a key member of Ghana's historic Black Satellites team that won the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Egypt, making Ghana the first—and still the only—African nation to lift the prestigious title.
