LAW ALONE CAN’T FIX IT: KWEKU TUA OSEI ECONOMIST WARNS ON 24-HOUR ECONOMY ON ICADTV GHANA NTI

Today on ICAD TV’s “Ghana Nti” morning show, host Nana Nhyiraba Kwabena Asrifi interviewed economist Mr. Kweku Tua Osei about Ghana’s new 24-hour economy law and its implications for the country. Mr. Osei explained that the 24-hour economy allows work and services to operate around the clock, boosting economic activity, creating jobs, and generating foreign exchange. However, he emphasized that the law alone cannot change the country — its success depends on how the government addresses practical challenges. He highlighted three main goals of the law: Establish authority to coordinate and manage the 24-hour economy. Increase overall economic activity to promote national progress. Support continuous sector operations, enabling Ghana to export more locally-made products. Mr. Osei warned that for the 24-hour economy to succeed, the government must tackle utilities costs, security, transport, and worker welfare. Many jobs operate at night, but security is weak, and there is a lack of adequate transport for night workers. Without buses and proper support, the program could face serious challenges. He noted that some sectors already operate around the clock, but the law provides formal backing, and proper planning and resources are essential for its effectiveness.
