FUEL PRICE HIKE SPARKS CONCERN – GPRTU TO MEET LEADERSHIP OVER TRANSPORT FARE ADJUSTMENTS

On the Ghana Nti morning show on ICAD TV, hosted by Nana Nhyiraba Kwabena Asirifi, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Abass Moro, addressed concerns over recent fuel price increases and their impact on transport operations. He explained that leadership of the union will soon meet to decide on the next steps regarding possible adjustments in transport fares. According to him, any decisions taken will be communicated to the media to avoid confusion and prevent tension between drivers and passengers. He noted that delays in reaching a decision could create problems within the transport sector, adding that the union intends to meet every two weeks to review fuel price changes and their effects on operations. Abass Moro also appealed to the government, stressing that increases in fuel prices affect transport fares, which in turn impacts the cost of goods and services across the country. He referenced earlier agreements involving a one-cedi fuel component meant to support electricity debt arrangements. He emphasized that transport fare increases cannot be done arbitrarily, as the sector is governed by regulations and must follow leadership approval. He also stressed the importance of informing passengers properly and treating them with respect during fare adjustments. On enforcement, he raised concerns about unlawful fare practices by some drivers, noting that both drivers and passengers sometimes contribute to the problem when complaints are not made. He also mentioned issues surrounding changes in the checking of driver license numbers, stating that the union does not fully agree with the new approach introduced by the police.
