DECEMBER 31 & NATIONAL HOLIDAYS: HISTORIAN LAWYER ANOKYE FRIMPONG EXPLAINS THE REJECTION.

Lawyer and historian Anokye Frimpong spoke on ICAD TV’s Ghana Nti Morning Show about the significance of December 31 and Revolution Day. The day was originally declared a national holiday by Jerry John Rawlings to mark the 1981 revolution, but later reforms altered its status. Frimpong highlighted two perspectives on the holiday: Some view Rawlings as correcting corruption. Others see the military rule as unconstitutional, which is why December 31 was ultimately rejected as a national holiday. On Ghana Month (March 6), he reminded citizens that independence was achieved collectively by Kwame Nkrumah, the Big Six, traditional leaders, activists, and ordinary citizens. Frimpong urged Ghanaians to engage in respectful debate, preserve history fairly, and focus on development rather than division.
