HEALTH EXPERT Mr. PHILIP AMOAH URGES CITIZENS TO KNOW THEIR HEALTH RIGHTS.
Health expert and public health advocate Mr. Philip Amoah, who has over 15 years of experience in health and human rights, spoke to Nana Nhyiraba Kwabena Asrifi on ICAD TV’s Ghana Nti Morning Show about the state of healthcare in Ghana.
Citizens Must Know Their Right to Health
Amoah emphasized that health issues in Ghana did not start today and that citizens must take responsibility for their own health. “Our constitution guarantees the right to health. If we are sick and go to a hospital, it is our right to be attended to. Being denied care is against our rights,” he said.
He added that citizens should hold the government accountable if hospitals fail to provide proper care. “If doctors neglect patients, we must take legal action. This ensures that healthcare providers understand that citizens know their rights,” Amoah explained.
Government Policies and Public Focus
Amoah praised the government for economic stability, including teacher and nurse salaries, but stressed that citizens should also demand attention to healthcare. “If we vote for leaders who care about health, they will prioritize it. Citizens’ focus on health ensures government focus on health,” he said.
Lessons from Free Maternal Policies
He highlighted the free maternal healthcare policies introduced during Kufuor’s administration, noting that they significantly helped pregnant women by reducing reliance on unqualified or herbal care providers. Amoah added that taking legal action against poor treatment also helps strengthen the health system.
Advocacy for Health Rights
As a public health and health rights advocate with 15 years of experience, Amoah called on Ghanaians to know their rights, demand accountability, and prioritize health in civic and electoral decisions.
