BLACK STARS HAVE EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS AT CHAN; COACH DESERVES MORE TIME

Former Ghana international and 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup winner Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has commended the quality of the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN), describing the tournament as highly competitive and well organised despite concerns over some refereeing decisions. Speaking in an interview on ICAD TV, Agyemang-Badu said the competition has attracted impressive fan support and has largely lived up to expectations. «“So far, so good. Everything has been good except some of the refereeing decisions. Apart from that, the tournament has been excellent,” he said.» He added that the tournament’s regulations have also influenced the approach of some teams during matches. African Teams Impress Agyemang-Badu praised the overall standard of participating African nations, saying nearly every team has produced competitive performances throughout the tournament. He singled out Morocco, Algeria, Cape Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, DR Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Senegal and South Africa for their impressive displays, noting that Tunisia was the only side that failed to meet expectations. According to the former Black Stars midfielder, Morocco has once again demonstrated why it remains one of Africa’s strongest football nations. However, he described Cape Verde as the tournament’s biggest surprise. «“Cape Verde has been outstanding. In my opinion, they have been one of the best-performing African teams, and in a few years they will become a very difficult side to beat,” he stated.» Black Stars Exceed Expectations Agyemang-Badu also applauded Ghana’s performance, particularly that of the locally based players, saying they have surpassed the expectations of many football fans. He observed that few Ghanaians expected the Black Stars to progress this far in the competition. «“The players have done very well, especially the local players. Many Ghanaians did not believe they could reach this stage, but they have proved everyone wrong,” he said.» Coach Deserves More Time The former midfielder also expressed confidence in the Black Stars' head coach, arguing that he should be given more time despite the criticism he has faced. According to Agyemang-Badu, the coach has built a strong relationship with the players, restored their confidence and created a positive atmosphere within the squad. «“The coach has done well. The connection between him and the players is fantastic. He has relieved the pressure on the players and given them confidence. I believe he should stay,” he said.» He, however, noted that should Ghana face any sanctions over the alleged use of ineligible players or any technical issue involving the coach, the Ghana Football Association would be justified in reviewing the situation and making an appropriate decision. For now, Agyemang-Badu believes both the technical team and the players deserve praise for Ghana’s encouraging performance at the African Nations Championship.
