AHAFO ANO SOUTH EAST EDUJAMA RICE FARMERS LAMENT LOW DEMAND FOR LOCALLY PRODUCED RICE

Rice farmers in the Ahafo Ano South East Edujama area have expressed concern over the declining demand for locally produced rice, saying the situation is threatening their livelihoods and causing significant financial losses. Speaking on ICAD TV's Ghana Nti Morning Show with host Nana Nhyiraba Kwabena Asirifi, the President of the Ahafo Ano South East Edujama Rice Farmers Association, Moro Mahama, said many farmers are finding it increasingly difficult to sell their rice after harvest because of weak demand in the local market. According to him, many consumers prefer imported fragrant ("perfume") rice, a trend the farmers believe has contributed to the low patronage of locally produced rice. Mr. Mahama disclosed that a 50-kilogram bag of locally produced rice currently sells for GH¢400. He explained that when harvested rice remains unsold for extended periods, especially during the rainy season, moisture causes the grains to sprout, making them unmarketable and resulting in substantial losses for farmers. He further noted that farmers enjoyed stronger sales during the administration of former President **** and expressed hope that similar support measures could be introduced to revive the local rice market. On behalf of the farmers, Mr. Mahama appealed to the Minister for Food and Agriculture, ****, to implement policies that will increase the patronage of locally produced rice, strengthen the local rice industry, and improve the livelihoods of rice farmers across the country. Mr. Moro Mahama reaffirmed his commitment as President of the Ahafo Ano South East Edujama Rice Farmers Association to continue advocating for the welfare of rice farmers and called on Ghanaians to support local rice production by choosing locally produced rice.
