“We Have Failed the Minister for Defence and Other Victims Who Lost Their Lives in the Fight Against Galamsey”

Political analyst Siaw Manddela has called on the government to intensify the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, insisting that the best tribute to the late Defence Minister and other officials who lost their lives during anti-galamsey operations is to ensure that the menace is effectively tackled. Speaking in an interview with Nhyiraba Kwabena Asirifi on the Ghana Nti Morning Show on ICADTV, Mr. Manddela said Ghana would have failed those who sacrificed their lives in the fight against illegal mining if the country is unable to protect its water bodies and forests. He stressed that the fight against galamsey must be strengthened to restore polluted rivers and protect Ghana’s natural resources. According to him, if the country cannot successfully deal with illegal mining, it risks returning to a situation where water bodies and forests are better protected through stronger measures. Mr. Manddela further stated that he would be disappointed in President John Dramani Mahama if his administration fails to address the galamsey crisis. He warned that failure by the government to fight illegal mining during President Mahama’s tenure could have serious consequences for the future of Ghana
