Tax Consultant Questions Absence of Road Toll Reintroduction in 2026 Mid-Year Budget

Tax practitioner and financial consultant Foster Oteng Amoako has expressed disappointment over the absence of any announcement on the reintroduction of road tolls in the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review. Speaking with Nhyiraba Kwabena Asirifi on ICAD TV after Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson presented the budget to Parliament on Thursday, July 23, 2026, Mr. Amoako said he expected the government to outline plans to restore road toll collection, citing previous assurances and the potential for job creation. “I was expecting the return of the road toll booths after the government made numerous promises to bring them back to create employment,” he said. According to Mr. Amoako, restoring road tolls could serve as an additional source of government revenue while also supporting road maintenance and infrastructure development. The 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review presented an assessment of Ghana’s economic performance and outlined fiscal measures for the remainder of the year. However, the presentation did not include any announcement regarding the return of road toll collection. Mr. Amoako urged the government to clarify its position on the policy, noting that many Ghanaians had anticipated a clear direction on the issue following earlier public commitments. He maintained that a well-structured road toll system could contribute to domestic revenue mobilisation and help address funding challenges in the road sector.
