REPATRIATION CONTINUES: FINAL GROUP OF GHANAIANS IN SOUTH AFRICA TO RETURN HOME ON JULY 25

The Government of Ghana has announced that the final group of Ghanaians stranded in South Africa following reported xenophobic attacks is expected to return home on July 25, 2026, as part of an ongoing repatriation exercise. In response to the attacks, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in collaboration with the Government of Ghana, initiated measures to repatriate affected Ghanaian nationals. The first phase of the exercise saw approximately 900 Ghanaians returned safely to Ghana. Last week, during ICAD TV's Ghana Nti Morning Show, a stranded Ghanaian identified as Wofa Kwasi said that about 960 Ghanaians were still in South Africa, many of whom were stranded, ill, and seeking assistance to return home. According to Wofa Kwasi, the affected Ghanaians had appealed to the Ghanaian government for several weeks to facilitate their return. Speaking again on Ghana Nti Morning Show with host Nhyiraba Kwabena Asirifi, Wofa Kwasi disclosed that the Minister Counsellor at the Ghana High Commission in South Africa, Benjamin Quarshie, informed them on Tuesday, July 14, that the second and final batch of Ghanaians would be repatriated on July 25. He indicated that with about two weeks remaining before the scheduled departure, preparations and administrative processes would commence to ensure the safe return of the affected Ghanaians. Wofa Kwasi also expressed appreciation to the media for highlighting their plight, saying the extensive coverage played a significant role in drawing attention to their situation and helping to facilitate the repatriation process.
