NPP Can Stage Demonstrations but Fails to Show Sympathy for the Minister for Defence and Other Victims Who Lost Their Lives – Mark Awusi Arko, Convener of Election Watch Ghana

The Convenor of Election Watch Ghana, Mark Awusi Arko, has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for staging a demonstration on the same day Ghana observed a national day of mourning for the late Minister for Defence and other victims of the military helicopter crash, describing the move as insensitive and lacking compassion. Speaking in an interview with Nhyiraba Kwabena Asirifi on the ICADTV Ghana Nti Morning Show, Mr. Awusi Arko acknowledged that the NPP has a constitutional right to embark on peaceful demonstrations. However, he argued that holding the protest on a day dedicated to mourning national heroes and other victims failed to show empathy to the bereaved families and the nation as a whole. According to him, the demonstration, which centred on concerns over TikTok users allegedly insulting, defaming, and threatening national leaders, detracted from what should have been a solemn occasion for unity, reflection, and national solidarity. He warned that if abusive conduct on social media is not addressed, Ghana risks eroding its moral values, cultural respect, and national discipline. Mr. Awusi Arko also commended Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah for what he described as proactive efforts to safeguard the country. He said the Minister has engaged the security agencies to strengthen national security and reinforce Ghana’s borders against potential threats from neighbouring countries, with the aim of maintaining peace, stability, and public safety. On ongoing legal matters, Mr. Awusi Arko stated that he supports the arrest and prosecution of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, arguing that there is sufficient evidence to justify such action. However, he maintained that the case involving former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Sedinam Tamakloe Attionu, requires a comprehensive and thorough investigation to ensure justice is served through due process. He added that he supports the Attorney General’s decision to continue pursuing the MASLOC case, stressing that justice must be guided by credible evidence, due process, and the rule of law .
