MAHAMA’S KOTOKA AIRPORT RENAME GETS HISTORIAN -LAWYER ANOKYE FRIMPONG’S APPROVAL.

Lawyer and historian Anokye Frimpong spoke on ICAD TV’s Ghana Nti Morning Show about the debate over renaming Kotoka International Airport. Kotoka Airport is named after Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, a military officer involved in the 1966 coup that removed Kwame Nkrumah. Frimpong said that while opinions are emotional and divided, he believes it was good news that President Mahama approved the name change, acknowledging the contributions of historical figures like Nkrumah. He applauded Mahama for this decision. He noted: Supporters of renaming argue that Nkrumah’s contributions to independence and infrastructure deserve greater recognition. Others point out that Kotoka was declared a national hero, and history includes both civilian and military eras. Frimpong emphasized that decisions on renaming must be consultative and based on national consensus, avoiding political or tribal tension.
