LAWYER KOFI BAKAI DISCUSSES LIFE AND DEATH SENTENCES IN PRESIDENTIAL PARDON
Lawyer Kofi Bakai has discussed the treatment of prisoners serving life sentences and those facing death sentences in relation to the presidential pardon involving 863 prisoners.
Speaking to Journalist Nhyiraba Kwabena Asirifi on ICAD TV's Justice for All segment, the lawyer addressed questions concerning the length of imprisonment, the possibility of clemency and the circumstances under which prisoners may be considered for a pardon.
During the interview, Journalist Asirifi raised the issue of life imprisonment, including the situation of prisoners who have spent many years behind bars.
The discussion also examined the relationship between a life sentence and a fixed period of imprisonment. A life sentence does not automatically mean 20 years in prison; its legal effect depends on the applicable law and the terms of the sentence.
The issue of death sentences was also raised as part of the broader discussion about presidential clemency and the different categories of prisoners who may be considered for relief.
The interview highlighted the importance of understanding the legal distinctions between life imprisonment, a fixed-term sentence and a death sentence when discussing presidential pardons.
