Government Cannot Force Ghanaians in South Africa to Return

Security expert Richard Kumadoe has stated that the Government of Ghana cannot compel Ghanaians living in South Africa to return home, stressing that they travelled there voluntarily for various reasons. Speaking in an interview on ICAD TV's Ghana Nti Morning Show with host Nana Nhyiraba Kwabena Asirifi, Mr. Kumadoe explained that the government's responsibility is to facilitate the voluntary return of citizens who wish to come back to Ghana. According to him, Ghanaians interested in returning should take advantage of the government's arrangements by registering with the appropriate authorities. He said the registration process would enable the government to determine the number of people willing to return and make the necessary travel arrangements. The discussion followed concerns raised during an earlier interview on the programme, where some Ghanaians in South Africa alleged that the Ghana High Commission had left them stranded amid ongoing xenophobic attacks. Responding to the allegations, Mr. Kumadoe cautioned against drawing conclusions before the claims are verified. He emphasized the need for the relevant authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly to establish the facts. He also urged Ghanaians living in South Africa to remain in regular contact with the Ghana High Commission and closely monitor official updates from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Mr. Kumadoe further advised Ghanaian nationals to rely on official communication channels for guidance and protection, noting that the xenophobic attacks in parts of South Africa remain a serious concern that requires vigilance.
