SOCIO-POLITICAL ANALYST COMMENTS ON SOPHIA AKUFFO'S RESIGNATION AND BAWUMIA'S CRITICISM OF MAHAMA

A socio-political analyst, Nana Piesie Anto, has stated that former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo should have declined her appointment to the Council of State from the outset if she was unwilling to serve. Speaking on ICAD TV's morning show Ghana Nti, hosted by Nana Nhyiraba Kwabena Asirifi, Nana Piesie Anto said reactions to Madam Akuffo's appointment were mixed due to her perceived association with former President Nana Akufo-Addo and the Danquah-Busia-Dombo political tradition. According to him, concerns have been raised by some sections of the public regarding certain decisions and appointments connected to the Council of State. He noted that Madam Akuffo had previously expressed concerns about procedures used in matters involving public officials, leading some people to believe she had disclosed issues that were expected to remain confidential. The analyst suggested that public criticism surrounding her comments may have contributed to her decision to resign. He added that if Madam Akuffo no longer wishes to serve on the Council of State, her decision should be respected as part of Ghana's democratic process. He further stated that President John Dramani Mahama should appoint a replacement to fill the vacant position on the Council of State. Responding to suggestions that the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) may have influenced Madam Akuffo's resignation, Nana Piesie Anto said members of the Council of State are expected to serve the nation rather than any political party. The discussion also focused on recent comments made by former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia following a meeting with the Christian Council of Ghana, during which he reportedly accused President Mahama of failing Ghanaians. Nana Piesie Anto questioned the basis of Dr. Bawumia's criticism, arguing that the former Vice President served in government for eight years and should instead focus on outlining policies and solutions for Ghanaians. The analyst further challenged Dr. Bawumia to clearly state which promises made by President Mahama had not been fulfilled. He maintained that political leaders should prioritize presenting alternative policies and development plans rather than engaging in excessive criticism of their opponents. The remarks were made during a discussion on national governance, accountability, and Ghana's political landscape on ICAD TV's Ghana Nti programme.
