Seize Wontumi’s Properties and Give Him 3 Months Instead of 20 Years Sentence"

Flagbearer of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Christian Kwabena Andrews, popularly known as Osofo Kyiriabosom, has proposed that New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, should have his properties and funds seized and serve a shorter custodial sentence instead of a possible 20-year prison term. Speaking on ICAD TV’s Ghana Nti Morning Show with Nana Nhyiraba Kwabena Asirifi, Osofo Kyiriabosom argued that recovering assets linked to the case, together with a brief jail term, would be a more effective approach. “Seize all his properties and monies and give him 3 months instead of the 20 years prison sentence,” he stated in reference to Wontumi. The GUM leader said such a measure could reduce pressure on Ghana’s prison system, serve as a deterrent, and ensure that resources allegedly connected to the case are recovered for the state. His comments come amid public discussions surrounding the legal case involving Chairman Wontumi and debates over appropriate punishments for economic and corruption-related offences. Osofo Kyiriabosom’s proposal has added to broader conversations about sentencing reforms, including whether asset recovery and alternative penalties should play a greater role in addressing financial crimes.
