Political Analyst Alex Nti Criticises Appeal in Sedina Tamakloe Case, Backs Proposal to Lower Presidential Age to 30

Political analyst Alex Nti has criticised the Appeal Court’s decision in the case involving former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, describing the outcome as disappointing and unhelpful to Ghana’s fight against corruption. He also endorsed the Attorney General’s proposal to lower the minimum age for presidential candidates from 40 to 30 years, saying young people have the competence and innovative ideas needed to lead the country. Speaking in an interview on ICADTV’s Ghana Nti Morning Show, Alex Nti said the judgment had raised concerns among many Ghanaians, particularly because the case centred on allegations of the misuse of public funds. According to him, while Ghana’s legal system guarantees every convicted person the constitutional right to appeal, the outcome of the case leaves many unanswered questions. “As Ghanaians, what we know is that she was alleged to have misused public funds. If that is the case, are we saying there was no misappropriation of public funds? I personally disagree with the court’s judgment”. Alex Nti maintained that public confidence in the justice system could be affected if cases involving alleged financial loss to the state are not handled in a manner that assures citizens of accountability. On constitutional reforms, the political analyst expressed strong support for the Attorney General’s proposal to reduce the minimum age for presidential candidates from 40 to 30 years. He argued that leadership should be based on competence and vision rather than age, insisting that many young people possess the knowledge, creativity and leadership qualities required to govern effectively. “The youth have fresh ideas and should be given the opportunity to lead. It is not only older people who have the knowledge to become president,” he said. Drawing comparisons with countries such as the United States, Alex Nti noted that younger leaders have demonstrated their ability to govern successfully and urged Ghana to create similar opportunities for qualified young people to aspire to the nation’s highest office.
