FLOODING IN ACCRA UNDER CONTROL — NADMO REGIONAL DIRECTOR (G/A)GIVES DETAILS ON ACCRA NEW TOWN SCHOOL BUILDING COLLAPSE VICTIMS

Hon. Dennis Adjannor Nartey, the Greater Accra Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has assured residents that flooding in parts of Accra is under control following ongoing preventive measures. He explained that although early rainfall has been recorded, authorities have put in place interventions to reduce flooding in vulnerable areas such as Weija-Gbawe and Adenta within the 29 Municipal District Assembly. According to him, Accra’s low-lying nature contributes to flooding, as water naturally flows from the Akuapem highlands into the city. He added that infrastructure projects, including bridge construction, have helped reduce the impact of flooding in some areas. However, he warned that encroachment on drainage systems and indiscriminate dumping of waste into gutters continue to worsen the situation during rainfall. He called for public cooperation and stricter enforcement, stating that prosecution of offenders would serve as a deterrent. On the Accra New Town school building collapse, he provided details indicating that about 23 people were involved in the incident. He said 20 are believed to have survived, while 3 reportedly lost their lives, including two females and one male, with some minors among the affected. He assured the public that investigations and safety assessments are ongoing to prevent similar incidents in the future.
